Story behind the song
I wrote "Reach Your Hand Down" in memory of my nephew, Ricky, who was killed in a drunk driving accident in November of 2003. We were only 4 years apart in age, so we grew up more like siblings. He was a great kid, really funny, always quick with a sarcastic comment and a smile. He was also a musician--a drummer--and he had plans to study music industry in college. He played in a band with his friends and had a recording studio. And I really miss him. I never even knew how talented he thought I was until someone told me after he passed away that he used to tell them all the time what a great voice I had. And so one night, I was stuck in traffic on my way home and the chorus of this song just came to me. It was effortless, and I feel like it was some kind of collaboration between us across time and space. And now I see how many other people are touched by this song and I realize how similar we all are. We all experience love and happiness and loss and pain. This song for me will always be about Ricky. But I give this song out to all of you and hope it brings you comfort.
