Story behind the song
The lyrics are about a friendship that has lasted many years. They understand and draw from each other’s strengths and weaknesses. Confidence exudes when partnered in competitive events. They always feel the other is responsible for wins and chidingly blame the other for the loss. Paired activities have kept them together, never realizing that just being together completes them.
They’ve experienced romance separately but never with each other. Until now, he’s been too dumb to know why so much comfort is felt when they’re together, believing it’s just a friendship bond. It’s at the point where his brain begins to connect the dots, and realizes that what he’s been looking for has been in his face. It’s also, the first time that he’s unsure of what she’s thinking. Fortunately, for him, she had been doing the same thing, but recently figured it out, too. During this encounter, she purposefully hides her feelings, wanting him to commit first. She lets him squirm a bit before committing, too.
