Dhaka-dice
This is not as much a side-project to Fungus (since Fungus IS pretty much my solo project anyway)
as it is sort of a test tube where I try out my ideas to see what they sound like with full instrumentation.
Most of these songs are written for Fungus and will be played live and maybe even recorded in a real studio some time in the future, so a lot of the songs are really "Fungus" songs that are complete even before the other members have even heard them.
You could say they are to demo recordings what regular demo recordings are to professional studio recordings.
I also use the pseudonym "Dhaka-dice" when making hip-hop beats. But I'm not sure I can upload all my beats, as some of them contain samples that haven't been altered enough for me to be able to call them my own.
Anyways, if you're curios about what I'm doing, feel free to listen.
Story behind the song
I had written so many "love songs", or at least song that were about love or feelings caused by failed attempts at romance.
I decided to write about something else.
I think I got this idea where it seemed like everyone loved Bruce Springsteen.
Personally, I'm not very fond of Springsteen.
In fact, I don't see anything special about his music. To me, it's just another old man singing songs about old men for other men.
"Got a wife and kids in Baltimore Jack
I went for a ride and I never went back
Like a river that don't know where it's flowing
I took a wrong ride and I just keeping going
Everybody's got a hungry heart" and so on...
What is that anyway? I know he's not singing about himself, but about this guy he knew. But even if he's not trying to promote being a jerk and abandoning your wife and children, many men see it as romanticism and will probably listen to it when they're driving away, leaving their family and all responsibility behind.
That type of music is written from a man's point of view, and not even a type of man I can or would want to identify with.
And that's what this song is about.
Being a man playing rock music
and having countless predecessor
that you're supposed to respect
just for the sake of it.
Rock music isn't about respecting the elders
just for the sake of it. It's supposed to be about rebellion, anti-establishment music.
But for me, most old music, and unfortunately a lot of rock music, represent the establishment and most important, the patriarch.
In old man rock, the woman is a madonna or a whore.
A swedish female music journalist wrote an article about this, and mentioned Bruce's new Devils & Dust album. The song where an unhappy man goes to a prostitute and it's a very sad song but you never get to hear her story.
That's what really bugs me about a lot of rock music. The hero is always male, while the woman is only allowed to admire him.
With predecessors like that in rock music,
I don't feel obligated to respect the elders.
I wouldn't call myself a feminist, but it doesn't mean I support sexism or a culture that celebrates guys like Mick Jagger. Sure, Paint It Black is a great song, but he dates 15-year old girls for crying out loud.
If that's rock n' roll, then count me out.
Lyrics
A culture based on
unsatisfied male libido
I don't think that I
ever wanna be a part of this
macho society
I think I'd rather be pissed
I am so sick of those who stood before me
I am so tired of their same old story
I'm not a prick, maybe a little bit
unsatisfied, but I'm so not like them at all
That old time poet
I think I can do without
working class hero
domestic work doesn't count
He'll build this world because
because he's a man
She's just the admirer
because that's all she can be
I am so sick of those who stood before me
I am so tired of their same old story
I'm not a prick, maybe a little bit
unsatisfied, I'm so not like them at all
