In one month, the local rapper wrote and recorded an 18 song album. He had to. His producer, RoCz, gave him a deadline and a deal: The beats are free if the project is completed in one month. Mission accomplished. This week, Sicksense and RoCz released "HangOverCamp: Until We Meet," a collaboration that shouldn't have happened for many reasons. One, the deadline, which RoCz set because he wanted the project completed before joining the military. Two, logistics: Sicksense (aka Lance Suksiriwong) loves in Anchorage; Rocz lives in Italy. But Sicksense couldn't turn down the challenge, or the deal. RoCz charges upward of $1,000 for song beats. "I'm lucky," Sick said. "I have 18 beats I didn't pay for!" RoCz sent his catalog of beats to Sicksense late last year. Sicksense wrote songs over his favorite tracks and recorded locally at Skylab, a studio run by rapper-producer Hayden, who engineered and mixed the project. Sicksense, a gravely voiced rapper who is a senior at Dimond High, spans the lyrical globe on "Until We Meet." He's got a slew of the usual banging rap fare, a few songs for the ladies, a freestyle session and a song dedicated to his mom called "Shining Armor." The album even has the obligatory commercial track. Well, sorta. "A Commercial Song" is actually Sicksense's amusing pimp slap at today's tired cookie cutter hip-hop hits. "We were in the studio, me and Hayden were like 'I need one commercial song and a corny beat," Sick said. "we laughed for a good 30 minutes, and I was like, 'I'm not going to rap like a commercial song. I'll make this commercial song making fun of commercial songs." Now that the concept behind "A commercial Song" is cleared up, Sicksense wants to make one more thing perfectly clear. "Before all the parents and the teachers (get upset), I just want everyone to know that HangOverCamp is nothing alcohol-related," Sick said, explaining that RoCz's production company is called Drunk Doggy, and when you mix "Drunk" with "Sick" you've got "hungover." Sicksense said he isn't having a CD release party but is selling "Until We Meet" for $10 a copy on the streets or via the Internet. "Until We Meet" - Reviewed by Jibb of Project 1 2/19/04 Since leaving his crew "The Boondox" Sick decided to do a duo project with the beat maestro, Hip-Hop producer all the way in Italy "RoCz" of HangOverCamp from Drunk Doggy Productions. RoCz got some of the hottest beats I ever heard. So if you ask me, I'd put him up with the big namers like Pharrel, Timbaland, JustBlaze, 9th Wonder, etc., and that's real. SickSense is known locally as a battle emcee and on this project you can tell he has and is proving that he is more than a battle emcee. He goes from nothing to something with nothing to lose, but with somethings to prove on his 17 track album. Sick has a variety of songs from "I Need You" for all you real Hip-Hop heads to "Commercial Song" for the clubs. To his own revised version of "Janie Got a Gun" and his song dedicated to one of his close friends that passed away September 11, 2003 called "Lonely Highway". One of his lady tracks explains his past relationship with a girl hoping that in the end they will end up together and that song is called "Me and You" then he goes to his other lady track called "Girl, Tell Me". On the outro Sick gives shout-outs to crews, gives thanks to his homeboys, and all his love for people with love towards him. Then you can't forget the underground "Interlude" where him and another emcee, Jdub, come together and get grimey with it. They freestyle back and forth spittin' fire! This album you can turn on and listen from the first track all the way through to the very last track with a surprising bonus track without disliking any song. Word of mouth is that this album "Until We Meet" is probably the hottest album to be dropped in the Alaska Hip-Hop scene. The only flaw that I noticed and personally don't think is much of a problem with Sick is his breath control. Even though you can only notice it on a couple of tracks, it isn't much of a big deal. Overall, for some reason, I love everything about this album. Definately classic material. 5 Mics, whatever you want to call it. This is AK's album of the year. Much love and props on the album. One Love, Jibbs more reviews will be up. thanks for visiting and be safe, until we meet
