Story behind the song
Elgar's Enigma Variations is a classical favorite of many including mine. First performed in 1899, it was written around an original theme and presented with 14 variations for full orchestra. I was introduced to this piece in college and fell in love with it immediately. I decided to create a computer realization of one of my most favorite variations using the wonderful Garritan Personal Orchestra library samples. This recording demonstrates the technique known as "ensemble bulding" where the string, winds and brass sections of an orchestra are built literally from the combination of sounds from individual players. Humans cannot always hit all the notes right on cue and on pitch like the precision of microprocessor. So to compensate, I "randomize" the pitches, timbres and timing of the individual notes by a small fraction of a beat in order to create the illusion of the human touch. The results can be convincing. I invite feedback and I hope you enjoy this wonderful excerpt from the Enigma Variations--the entire piece is simply wonderful.
