as the day I saw him lying in the road
His coat was torn and bloodied in the folds
A dying soldier, my eyes did behold
I went and knelt down by his side
a face so scared though his pain he tried to hide
I held him up upon my bended knee
and leaned in close as he whispered to me

I fought the brave fight
but now I've got to go
I gave him water to ease his thirst
his young eyes were turning cold
He smiled at me, a lasting memory
Then the brave young soldier

not wanting to leave him on his own
As the night came on, I let him go
