He writes her a song that she can sing when she’s lonely
She pours her heart into a letter she hopes that he’ll see
So when the stars shine bright maybe July winds will blow
Carry him through the evening to her
Falling leaves cover the green outside her window
Autumn comes with such surprising speed
She sometimes wonders where all her time really goes
And tries to be all she thinks that he needs
He studies each face in the crowd for a trace of her
Winter chill forces collars high and hats low, hides the smile
He hopes that come summer there’ll be someone waiting by the water
Boats and seasons come and go but he’s waiting all the while
He’ll paint the harbor four times a year by different lights
She’ll hang the picture on the wall if the time is ever right
Maybe one day soft July winds will drift them together
Floating leaves forever
And every tune that comes on her radio is about this man she hasn’t met
All the people he meets never add up to this girl he hasn’t seen yet
She’s beautiful and he’s lonely as he’s sleeping without her
He’s all she wants, she’s dreaming of him all through winter
She’s singing softly to herself and thinking if he’s lonely
He reads a letter from an old friend, and closes his eyes to see
True love standing, hair rippling in the July winds
How pleasant summer days
How white the snow which fell on two lonely hearts
How bright the sunshine now, lighting up the park
July winds scatter the first of the falling leaves
Autumn comes with such surprising speed
