Story behind the song
In April of 1981 I left the beach town of Venice, California in Los Angeles and moved to Cherbourg in France. That summer I received a letter from a friend in Venice who greatest pleasure was to haunt the beach, girl-watching. It read : "It's too bad you're not here this summer. All those roller-blade girls down on the bike path who skate around in bikinis, are now waiting for the police patrols on the boardwalk to drive past them. As soon as the police cars are out of sight in the crowds, the girls are ripping off the bikinis and skating around starkers until the next patrol cars passes about five minutes later! All I can say is, ""Having a wonderful time. Wish you were here!"
Three years later I began writing my second rock and roll musical, "California : A State Of Being." Naturally, as the musical was about everything Californian, I felt I had to include those wonderful girls. And that's how I wrote "Rollerskating Nude" and how it came to be in the musical, which alas, has never yet found a backer.
