"We were halfway through high school when the music took hold!" Two guys, two girls, all atheists formed Zan Batman Circus in 2004 in Religious Education class at Dunedin high school Kavanagh College. Their influences include the Yeah Yeah Yeahs, Sonic Youth, Tool, Fiona Apple, Fur Patrol, Nine Inch Nails and the Smashing Pumpkins. The music is best described as an eternal struggle, sometimes lost to a drowning in lead guitar solo and jangly arpeggios, most of the time won over by a loud grungy riff. Like giving birth to a hammer, or making love to a naked flame, Zan Batman Circus' rawness is oddly pleasing.

Story behind the song
ooh hoo you wish you knew. you never will.
Lyrics
here comes honesty fast like you it barely sees me numb but for the shock of two thirty when you looked so good it hurt me wait for the black over the blue where my thoughts are finally my own and i sometimes think of you you mean so much you mean so much your smile is disarming to a heart with no luck oh abstract noun feeling of optimism why have you left me now when all but my soul has risen should i subside and change myname to depair should i learn to fear what i cannot see or hear you mean so much you mean so much your smile is disarming to a heart with no luck you mean so much you mean so much with your smile that is disarming to my heart with no luck
