Story behind the song
In 1978 Jeff Wayne came out with a wonder two record set of progressive rock telling the story of “H.G. Well’s War of the Worlds”. The sounds they used was some of the best. I am a big fan of Science Fiction and I Love those old movies like “Battle of the Planets” especially those B movies from the fifties, sixties it makes for a great Saturday afternoon. I didn’t want to call this “War of the Worlds” and I swear there WAS a science fiction movie called “War Between the Worlds” - but I can’t find it. I was going for a strange alien sound with a weird breathing apparatus that sounds like feedback and mechanical moaning. Imagining that it was extracting chemical compounds from the air and compressing them for life support. Remember that “Twilight Zone” episode “To Serve Man”? It's stuck with me all these years. It was about a scientist who was to translate a book the humans found by these aliens that were befriending them. In the final translation - it was a cookbook for serving man as food. If you have never heard Jeff Wayne’s musical of “War of the Worlds” it is a classic. It’s narrated by Richard Burton and it’s a musical with lots of great progressive rock music.
