Story behind the song
Billy has always had girl trouble, but this time he got something out of it, and we wrote this song.
Lyrics
Well I was driving on down on the fourth of July to see my darlin' girl But when I finally arrived, she broke my heart as she said to me: "Baby, we're through, I'm leaving you. I found someone new that's better than you." Well I cried myself to sleep that night in Kansas on the fourth of July Couldn't bring myself to wake up and drive home All I did was stay put and think what did I do? What did I do? I sat in the car and over and over again I heard her say: "Baby we're through, I'm leaving you. I found someone new that's better than you." So I stayed in Kansas and found a job, I waited tables at a bar And one night I got so drunk they had to carry me to my bed After a week I still wasn't over her I just couldn't believe the truth I'd felt so damn proud to have a girl like her, she was everything to me The months rolled on and my beard grew long but I was starting to understand She was hone but still I remained alive I drove back home to sweet ol' Tennesee and put her out of my life I'd finally learned deep down inside that when things are bad only you can make them better I was no longer mad, in fact I loved her more Because she'd taught something important to me It doesn't matter in the end because the funny thing is that life goes on Life goes on, life goes on Life goes on and on and on
