Story behind the song
This song was written shortly after the death of Elliott Smith. It has an obvious influence, and is probably the only song I've written that wears its tortured heart on its frayed sleeve. Most of the lyrics deal with self-doubt and conflict. Sometimes when someone is trying to make you a better person, it can backfire and lead to feeling inadequate or not quite good enough. This song is about the endless quest to be something beautiful for something else, only written from the lowest point of the proverbial journey to self-understanding. It's a twisted love song. It's about wanting to be something more all the time. Not wanting to feel ugly, not just in appearance, and sometimes keeping these image (and health) issues hidden ("in disguise"). I don't know how else to describe it. This is only a sample from the full demo version. I'll be re-recording this song along with about 30 or more others this summer/fall for two separate CDs.
Lyrics
I can offer you sunshine on a mine. Dripping muscles like every other kind. She is poison like the windows in the sky. He is motionless enough to get us by. I am sick of being ugly in disguise. I am sick of feeling ugly in her eyes. I am sick of feeling ugly all the time. Ugly all the time. Ugly... And I can offer you comfort on the wave. And I am pointless like the flowers on a grave. He is broken like the stitches of a wound. I'm so damn selfish that I'll try to hide the moon.
