Story behind the song
Again there is a story involved. I'll pass it on in the lyrics if your interested in reading my vision. I am trapped in a hotel room in Atlanta with a flaky internet connection and little interest in risking my life trying to drive anywhere, so I buried my head into this song. I hope it finds an audience to appreciate it.
Lyrics
Running away from a broken home in Mid-west. Cheryl decides to take her everything and go to L.A. No real ideas in her mind but to get away from the hole she was in. She didn't realize how much deeper some holes are until she woke up that fateful night in the bus station with a homeless man right in her face. "Look Into the Eyes of a mad man" He said. She bolted out into the dark streets of a city she had never seen in light. It does rain in some parts of L.A. She finds herself in the seediest part of town. She befriends a large black woman who tries to get her off the street before she gets swollowed. The woman takes her to a room and tells her not to answer the door or make a sound if someone comes. Quickly she leaves as if someone was expecting her. Cheryl didn't know Deon was trying to avoid her pimp - Big "C". Deon returns worn out. She crashes almost as soon as she arrives. A loud knock wakes them both - looking at each other. Deon tells Cheryl to hide in the other room. Deon is talking - Cheryl hears a man's voice - they argue and the door slams. Cheryl is very frightened. She stays with Deon for a while then Cheryl befriends Duane. Duane comes on strong and wants a relationship. At first he is friendly and generous. Until Cheryl moves into his apartment. He changes attitude and takes advantage of her whenever he's in the mood. One night he came home with glassy eyes and jittery accompanyied by a group of his friends. They all begin to paw at her, but she refuses and tries to escape. They hold her and someone gives her a shot. Everything becomes a blur. She wakes nude and locked in a room. She realizes how far out of her league she really is. She escapes insane Duane and goes back to visit Deon. But her apartment is empty and up for rent. The Super finds her in the apartment and asks if she's interested. She later found out about Deon's untimely dimise. In her mind she can still hear Deon telling her to go back home. Cheryl rediscovered herself. There was a choice - another way... It wasn't too late if she really wanted out. She found the fold piece of paper Deon had given her. She looked at it again, a hotline for runaways - she decided to reached out for help.
