Story behind the song
The lyrics are the major reason I was inspired for this. I always wanted to direct a song toward the Greek myth of Orpheus, and so, one day, the lyrics came to me, I wrote it all out, and it played effortlessly. The music attempts a rave-up at the climax, which I wasn't completely satisfied with, but given the limited 4-track technology, I did the best I could with it outside a proper studio or materials.
Lyrics
My wife died of a snakebite so I followed her down
to the kingdom of Hell
where her soul did dwell
and I found her bound.
Pled to Pluto: let me pluck my plectrum,
and if it pleases you
free my sweet Eurydice from this perdition...
He said:
"Boy if you can muster cheer
in any way or method here
I'll promise you both release
from your condition."
So I sang
to wash my heart
in the river of the dead...
And I sang
for the Gods to impart a smile
...and then he said:
"If you believe,
you can both go free
but you must not see this Hell again!
-And I'll warn you with this injunction:
I'll renege without compunction
if you turn your eyes back
the direction you've been..."
So I walked
for countless miles
and I talked
but she would not reply
And I walked...
but I wondered if she followed?
...and I pondered if Pluto (to me) had lied?
So I turned my eyes
to my wife's echoed cries
and saw her ghost receding me forever
now I believe and somehow rise
though all the joy within me dies
and I mourn the loss of my love's endeavor
and my tears become the stones
and I have no earthly or immortal home
and my head has been severed
from it's bodily bones.
So,...
I wander
the river
forever
alone.
