Through the silent night he ran. His eyes flooded with tears. He ran until his legs were numb. He stopped to catch his breath when a great flash appeared several yards away. The flash was followed by flying debris. Calinotia knew what had happened. The lives of those he loved were taken away. His house reduced to rubble. He opened his mouth to scream. No sound was heard. Never in his life had it been so silent. The sky overhead was black with smoke. The land laid to waste. In the silent, everything he knew and cared for was gone. Yet still he saw silent flashes all around him. He wept and wept. Until he no longer could. He stood and clenched his fist. Running once again, he passed the numerous tanks. He passed the dead and their families. He passed the Titanian troops. Running like he knew where he was headed his whole life. He dodged the tiny flying capsules. He saw the total destruction of Chromia. He could smell the burning houses and flesh. He felt the shrapnel and debris cutting his feet. Tasted the blood in his mouth. But all he heard was silence. The silent gun fire. The silent explosions. The silent screams of the Chromians. All of it in total and utter silence. The land began to slope up. He was near the Titanian border. That's when he felt something pierce his flesh. With intense heat and velocity. The tiny metal capsule had gone straight through his shoulder. The agonizing pain was soon dwarfed by his returning rage. Standing up he saw. The one he had run so hard to find. Pathiosan, Great Overlord of the Titanians. He held the machine. The machine that had blasted the capsule in and out Calinotia's shoulder. The machine that had taken the lives of so many Chromians. He did not know its name. For the Chromians were a peaceful race. But they had come to fear this machine wielded by the Titanians. And now face to face with their leader, he knew what to do. "I will kill him. Kill him like he killed my people, my friends, my family. Kill him to show him what death meant." But instead Calinotia dropped down. Down to his knees. He opened his mouth to say what he was thinking. "Take my life and spare the rest. Your hatred for them I will quench with my life. Spare those who are left. Take me and me alone." But these words never left his mouth. For Calinotia of Chromia was a deaf-mute. A simple young man who was days away from his marriage. A man who had supported his mother and siblings when his father was killed by a Titanians. Cal thought of the faces of those he had lost that night. He thought of all the other Chromians who had lost their families as well. He thought of his father and how proud he would be of him. Then Calinotia thought no more. For the feared machine of the Titanians had shot a capsule into his brain. Pathiosan, Great Overlord of the Titanians had killed Calinotia. A deaf-mute man from Chromia. Guilty of nothing but courage. Nothing but trying to save his people. Guilty of nothing but innocence.
