Acoustic Folk - Rock, singer/songwriter, storyteller
A New American Poet? I suppose that could be one way of describing Mark Alan. This singer / songwriter has definitely penned some songs whose imagery and emotion are nothing short of what you would find in the stanzas of Robert Frost. From the introspective look at the world while driving cross-country in This Road to the heartfelt conversations of two strangers in a bar in Last Cigarette, Mark's songs are about life and the people living it. Over the past 3-1/2 years, this 34-year old musician has played all over the Northeastern Oklahoma area and logged more than 150 gigs including opening for the 70's rock band America. During that time, Mark has started writing hundreds of songs, many of which transform, merge and melt together to form the finished products, while others wait their turn for that last perfect lyric. While many people have been called 'Students of Human Nature', Mark boasts that the difference is he took notes. This is evident in songs like Going On 19 and Two Ships which talk of loves lost and opportunities missed. Both of which were drawn from real life experiences. But not all of his songs are so serious. Superglue (for my broken heart) is a tongue in cheek tribute to the old honky-tonk, tear-in-beer style of country song. His debut CD will feature those as well as many other original compositions. In December of 2004, Mark produced and released his first single CD, Every Step, as a precursor to his first full lenght CD due out in Spring of 2005. The single featured three original tracks along with a classical guitar arrangement of Silent Night. This Summer, Mark will be hitting the festival circuit throughout the midwest as well as promoting his own concerts. In addition, he is currently writing a concept album and multimedia concert based on a short story he wrote called The Ballad of Tucker Davis. It's currently slated for release this Winter.

Story behind the song
Due to a last minute cancelation, I was forced to make a twelve hour drive through the midwest alone. Though it was a drive I had done many times before, this time it seemed so much different, everything around me and inside of me seemed so much different. Most of the lyrics to this song were running through my mind over the course of those 750+ miles, and I penned most of the song when I got to my hotel room that night.
Lyrics
Driving down this road, somewhere between Springfield and Chicago I passed Bloomington about a mile ago, heading north, all alone out on this road Driving down this road, just like I've done so many times before but today it seems to be so much more I wonder what I'm looking for out on this road Going on 600 miles and too many I don't knows. Can I leave my home behind for one so long ago? Can you really start again, brand new life and all new friends? Do the answers lie ahead out on this road? Driving down this road, those old familiar things have seemed to change the little sights that I seek have gone away I guess nothing stays the same out on this road And on the radio, I hear a brand news song they don't play back home and I know that everytime from now on it will take me somewhere out along this road Driving down this road 10 hours, two tanks of gas and one rest stop the only company I have is my thoughts and even that's not a lot out on this road I pay the final toll, on the tri-state, leaving Chicago just 60 some odd miles left to go and those things I still don't know Going on 700 miles and too many I don't knows. Am I going to stay this time or leave just like before? Can I really start again, brand new life and all new friends? Do the answers lie ahead out on this road? Driving down this road, heading south, on my way back home.
