Story behind the song
“Worlds Apart” was the first song I started working on. I recorded the guitar parts at home, most of it being straight out of the original, except I had this idea of using harmonics, so I tuned the guitar into a major chord and started adding harmonics to certain parts. In the end, we really liked them and left it in. I recorded the drums for both songs on the same day. I spent half the time just programming the right sounds and tuning them so that they sounded like the original kit in the song. I thought recording the actual part would be easy, but although most of the drum beats sound simple, there are a lot of complicated nuances to it that I hadn’t done before, and it ended up taking me a few hours to nail them down. Both songs have a lot of cymbal crashes at the end, and our kit has only one crash cymbal pad. We also have a ride pad, but I need the ride too! So I programmed a splash on one side of the pad, and a decent crash on the other. It would haven been a funny site to anyone coming into the room though as I was just going off on this one pad with both hands most of the time. I knew right away I wanted Mitch Adkins to record the lead vocals for this song. He has a great tenor voice, and he also knew and loved this song, and he did great. The background vocals were recorded by Aimee Camp and Catherine Evanoff. I added a lot of effects to those, like chorus and phaser. I read a book for keyboardists arranging woodwinds in their songs to get a more realistic version of the oboe and viola. It taught me about how the breathing works for different instruments, and how there will be natural fade ins and outs for an oboe, and where the vibrato will end up on a viola. Anyway, I hope you enjoy this clip of the last half of “Worlds Apart.”
