Five Minutes to Freedom, was formed the summer of 2001 in the small town of Gilroy, California. The band, made up of brothers Tom and Danny Carrillo, PJ Jammal and Kevin Pfeffer, are hitting the scene with an alt-rock /emo style sound. With acrobatic displays and a high-energy stage performance, it is no doubt the group has established and maintained a growing fan base. As their fan base grows, Five Minutes to Freedom continues to play and write original music increasing their song catalogue.
Members of the band have a tight knit history together not only as band mates, but as friends since grade school. Asked how Five Minutes to Freedom came up with their name, says Pfeffer, “We wanted something catchy that would stay in people’s minds, whenever your at school, those last five minutes seem to go by so slow when you just want to get the hell out there.”
In August of 2004, Five Minutes to Freedom took a break from performing live and set off to Love Juice Laboratories’ recording studio in Riverside, California to record their 9 track lp. “We’d just been practicing and writing a lot, letting our new sound evolve. We all wanted to get back in the studio and record our new sound,” says bassist Carrillo. The band describes its songwriting process as a “democratic one” where a band member pitches an idea that collectively gets fleshed out without any dramatic battles for creative control.”
After two long weeks of sleepless nights and eight-hour shifts, the band finished their second demo CD and was ready to get back out on the scene and do what they do best perform live. The band hit venues such as The Great American Music Hall in San Francisco and the Gaslighter in Gilroy.
Dedicated and driven, Five Minutes to Freedom are reaching for their well deserved star. “In our song ‘Time is Against Us’ we are just chasing our dreams in hopes that one day we will be able to do what we love to do, create and play music, as a career,” states Pfeffer.
Practicing, refining, and rehearsing their new material, Five Minutes to Freedom are breaking down barriers in the scene.
