Story behind the song
September Eleven brought many stories. This one particularly hit home because Mike Hingson is blind. I wrote this in the first person to dramatize his climb down 78 floors of the North Tower of WTC. Mike, if you're getting message I'd like to send you a disk.
Lyrics
Ode To Mike Hingson Of North Tower (This song was inspired by Mike Hingson who made it down 78 floors of the World Trade Center's north tower after a hijacked plane crashed into it. His best friend, Roselle a 3 ½-year-old yellow Labrador guide dog, was at his side.) © Stanley Loh, October 20, 2002 VERSE 1 Em Whoa! what was that? Shook me with a bang. I can’t see a thing, I smell a scurrying rat. Oh my God, people screaming, Tell me, what's going on? I’ll call Administration, where has everyone gone? Hey Mr. Frank, what do you make of that smell? Hey Miss Jane, sounds like the midst of hell. Come friend Roselle, we'd better be leaving now. BRIDGE I’m not afraid, We’re together ’Sel, you’ll be my guide. I’m not afraid, Take my cane and you’ll be my eyes, You’ll find us the way, Down this crumbling maze, We’ll pray our good Lord will show us the way. C Em C Em (Music Interlude) CHORUS – SUNG BY A CHOIR Women Five hundred fighters climbed up the towers, A thousand more found another way Men These braves on all the magazine covers, Were the heroes of the US of A! VERSE 2 Wait, wait, wait...please tell me, On what floor are we? Sixty-two and counting, that's a long way down. I feel a fire raging just above my crown, I hear a bunch of things falling, splattering all around, Hey that smells like gas, this must be the end? Hey, don't you go up! It’s bad around the bend! Thank God for fighters, I know we’re safer now. BRIDGE I’m not afraid, We’re together ’Sel, you’ll be my eyes. We’ll evacuate, Don’t you panic ’Sel, just be by my side, You’ll find us the way, Down this crumbling maze, We’ll pray our good Lord will show us the way. C Em C Em (Music Fade)
