Story behind the song
In the Northeast, where I've lived most of my life, people can be very closed and walled in their own lives. Reaching them with the Gospel is a special challenge. The river is a metaphor for the Spirit of God.
Lyrics
Traffic rushes by and I can feel the dirty wind. Neighbors never want to talk and no one needs a friend. A river flows beneath the bridge but a wall blanks out the view. I never saw the river flow on Jackson Avenue. The narrow houses crowding and the cars parked on the yard, the poison ivy vacant lots where the dust is packed down hard. I see the river shining down there in a tangle of trees. I see the faces of the neighbors aching to be free. Cars rushing by and people with their lives so far away on the other side of the wall. I hear their babies cry, I hear their telephones ring, but nobody calls. Living water Jesus gave to the woman at the well. Neighbors sleeping in their beds dream their desert hell. While the river flows beyond, and I'm just passing through, I believe that Jesus lives on Jackson Avenue. I'll find a hole in the chain link fence and bushwhack to the shore, dip my feet in the river, then go and knock on the neighbors' door. I'm the one who lives upstairs, do you know that Jesus loves you? I believe He loves everyone on Jackson Avenue. The cars rushing by and people with their lives so far away on the other side of the wall. I hear their babies cry, I hear their telephones ring, but nobody calls. Cars rushing by and people with their lives so far away on the other side of the wall. I hear their hearts' cry, I hear the Gospel ring, Jesus calls.
