Story behind the song
Ask most people that go to college this question "Are you gonna make money because you go to college, or are you going to college to make money?" And I think most moral people would like to make you believe...would like to make themselves believe...that the answer would be the former of the two. That they are, in fact, so akin to education that education is the sole purpose of their enrollment in school...and if they should get a good job because of their education, it's entirely out of their control. Now, let's say that , by todays standards, the best paying jobs (i.e. doctors, lawyers...blablabla) didnt pay at all...let's say you had to volunteer your time to be a doctor....and then let's observe how many (or few) of these same moral people enroll in a medical degree program...and better yet let's observe how easy it would be for ANYONE to enroll in a medical school. My point being...take away the prospect of money...and take away the supposed love for that line of work. This particular song is about my refusal to live that life-style. My refusal to settle into being educated in any one particular line of work, for the sole purpose of making money, such that I can remain a moral person...and it's about the consequences of that decision on my relationships, the constant oppostion I faced from "loved ones", and about how money shouldnt really matter at all. It came apparent, after a year of being with/loving someone, that I had to ask the question "Do you want to be with me because you love me, or do you love me because you want to be with me?" and when the apparent answer to that question was the latter of the two...I was lead to ask "well, what makes you want to be with me?"...and at the point in time that I wrote this song, it seemed that the reason this person wanted to be with me was money, or the prospect of a "well-off, afluent-suburban, 2.5 children" future. I say that it's aparent, because when I chose not to attend college anymore...this particular person ended our relationship...saying that I had no direction. When, in fact, I would say I had more direction than anyone. My decisions...my future...was based not on the prospect of money, but on the prospect of truth, logic, or a better world. Basically, what it comes down too is that if you love someone because of what they can do for you (i.e. they make you feel good, they can provide for you, etc.) you probably dont really love that person, because it seems as if by saying that, you are addmiting that the whole relationship is dependant on you. So, if there is ever a time that that person doesnt make you feel good, or cant provide for you, then you cease to love him/her...yeah.
Lyrics
Can't remember why I should live There's 6 million people inside my head I made it a point to tell them all to go to hell So now I'm stuck all alone with self pity and unpaid bills You took a look inside my head You didn't like what you saw and so you said "I'd hate to leave but I think I gotta be goin, because love=work=future=knowing" (but what you dont understand is) This compass keeps pointing different ways so now I cant picture anything past today Someone once tried to teach me how to fix it I couldn't stay, I couldn't cover the expenses (talkin 'bout college) So now it's only a matter of time before you leave because you're stuck in a future that's green and gold and without me but I dont wanna be left alone an empty pocket shouldnt mean that you cant love me Do you remember what you said to me in my car on the corner of 88th and 95th street? It meant alot, it was just last spring... Do you remember when you told me that you loved me? (prolly not)
