Story behind the song
Yeah, I know—both Steve Earle and k.d. lang had songs titled "Shadowland." Mine is original. It's spelled with an "e." The lyrics started with a high school gripe poem titled "Bad Day," updated for my current life. This is my WTF song, more experimental than the rest of my tunes. It turned out kind of surreal. The tune reminds me a bit of the original Music Box Orchestra, with several clashing melodies (see my main page for what MBO was). Think of "Shadoeland" as mood music if you're angry...or confused. It took a while for this song to grow on me...maybe it'll grow on you, too. I added a third guitar (fingered bass) and tried to set up a contrast between the three guitar lines. The result is discordant, almost aharmonious, and the middle of the intro/bridge sounds almost alt-country (a distorted echo of "The Yellow Rose of Texas," maybe?). I abandon the "wall of sound" for a (brief) fingered bass solo in the intro/bridge.
