And so, There you were Taking the train, Not for the better I think, But then again who's to say, Just where these things will lead?

Story behind the song
This is a song for one of the people who have inspired me throughout my life. Elvis Aaron Presley. I don't think I'd even be singing, if it weren’t for him. I just read 'Last Train To Memphis' by Peter Guralnick. A beautiful book that filled me with the images from my childhood, and the wonder of discovering the voice of Elvis, and you know sometimes, something fills you with such a strong emotion you just have to write about it. The song is really a comment on the journey Elvis took, and a chance to spend a little time with his memory while I was writing. Lyrically, I wondered if there was a point in his life where he asked himself 'can I turn back?,’ When Elvis took the train to Memphis, though; it was already too late for him. At that point 'Love Me Tender' was 'out there'. This is the ‘ old song from the Civil War’ mentioned in the lyric. It seems to me, that Elvis had his own, internal civil war, between his higher spiritual yearning, and his human need, just like the rest of us. Peace Be With You, Elvis Presley
Lyrics
LAST TRAIN TO MEMPHIS Some day, You'll remember, Summer rain falling, Trying to tell you something, About the nature of loving you You took the last train to Memphis And if you looked behind you, You know you would have seen, Your bridges burning To the strains of an old song, That came from the Civil War, Taking the last train to Memphis And so, There you were Taking the train, Not for the better I think, But then again who's to say, Just where these things will lead? Taking the last train to Memphis
