Story behind the song
This started as a murder ballad about a man who kills a hitchhiker, but I thought the story of the hitchhiker was more interesting. The echo of the guitar in the bridge and the angel choir are happy accidents.
Lyrics
The Traveler There was a man who walked across the desert Bothered by his thoughts more than the weather Oh he used to be a soldier, So used to following orders Now he’s lost He walked until his feet had touched the ocean And he thought of going on, Oh just the notion Of being swallowed whole, Another waterlogged soul Just because And he said please Take me somewhere, I don’t exist But I left him by the road (3x) And said, you cannot exist on your own There was a man who lived off barley water Dedicating shots to his favorite daughter Oh it seems so long ago, Now he doesn’t even know Her name And he asked me if I’d ever been to heaven Must have been some strange vibe I was sending He asked me to take him there, I told him everywhere Was Just the Same And he said please Take me somewhere, I’ve never lived But I left him by the road (3x) And said, you can’t stop living on your own We talked about David, We talked about sin We talked about History, And we talked about Bob Dylan Knocking on Heaven’s Door But I left him by the road (3x) And said, Son you’re going home I left him by the road (3x) And said Son you’re going home Son you’re going home Going home
