Story behind the song
My mother told me the story of how as a little girl, she would greet her father coming home from work with a broken toy and the knowledge and faith that he would fix it. As I had children of my own, I experienced the same thing from the other side. We should have the same faith, that no matter what is wrong in our lives, our Father in Heaven can fix it.
Lyrics
[Verse 1] He comes home from a hard day at work He’s met by a child with up-stretched arms And a broken toy and a sly little grin Can you fix it, Dad? I know that you can It’s my favorite game I want to play it again Can you fix it, Dad? I know that you can [Lift] Which of you would deny your child? How much more would your Father in heaven give you! [Chorus] I wish that I had the faith of a child I’d call on His name and my Father’d be there I know that He’d fix my broken life I wish that I had the faith of a child [Verse 2] She’s in the house “Mommy!” she hears She runs to the door sees her child in tears With a gentle hug she brings her own peace Can you fix it, Mom? I know that you can I fell down hard and I hurt my knee Can you fix it, Mom? I know that you can Lift Chorus [Bridge] In my life I’ve been lost more than found I have fallen when I thought I could fly Broken down I look up from the ground I look up to the heavens and cry Chorus [Coda] I wish that I had the faith of a child I pray I could have the faith... of a child
