Word up etc. Ewan Jones is a Cheltenham (UK) based singer/songwriter/youth-worker. He also plays bass for sometimes acoustic band The Black Flowers. ‘Not So Now’ is a collection of 12 songs that Ewan has written, re-written, recorded and performed over the last 4 years or so. The entire album was recorded in his bedroom using a rubbish guitar, a 30 year old Bass, a crap midi keyboard and a slow PC. He sings into his microphone through a pair of red fish-net tights. He is Welsh, but currently working with young people in Cheltenham. Ewan’s songs could fairly be described in turn as inspiring, downbeat and melancholic. Perfect ‘crap day’ or ‘late night’ music. The lyrics range from the delicate and self-explanatory to the veiled profound. His mum calls it ‘depressing’, but the album has also been described as ‘Possibly the most beautiful, genuine, spine tingling thing I own’, by somebody Ewan didn’t pay to offer kind words. Comparisons to recent popular singer-songwriters may be warranted, but Ewan’s influences range from Alanis Morisette to Metallica, via Ben Folds, Herbie Hancock and Humphrey Lytleton. Story behind the song
Boxing Day 2002. Sam and I just messing round with some lyrics we had. Music was too upbeat for the tone, so we slowed it down and darkened the chords. Sam never touches it, i play it all the time. Andy Symons played a Djembe on this (the millionth) version - i still can't get it quite how i want it, but see what you think.
Lyrics
could you be a long, long way away from me but still listening to every breath i breathe pictures fade, and memories never stay the same when will your image disappear for me? and on that day, how will we divide the blame, was this ever my responsibility? so i try to survive on the hope we placed in saying 'we'll get by one day, one day' in the blink of an eye my whole life has passed me by we made no plans that we can disregard, cause we never cared enough to try and if you were here what would you have to say of my cynical frame of mind? I always break down - this is my design when i was young i would hold a candle as the sun, lit and underneath my palm to see the blood glowing red, i never realised what it meant, i still remind myself from time to time trade a smile, trade a smile, i'll give you something more worthwhile, secrets that were kept to deep to tell open up, this is trust, this is the bearing of the soul, of stories that are too damn cheap to sell and so my words will speak of how much you mean to me and how meaningless you become when you're away i can't let it be when all i have is scattered history anecdotes and useless notes to keep
