Story behind the song
Every summer my dear friend (who happens to be an athiest) and I engage in a spirited discussion about the existence of God. This song was inspired by these backyard discussions.
Lyrics
The night was warm, the wine half gone That’s then the talk ceased being small We spoke of God, and why it is That anything exists at all I’m a big believer in design He said, man, don’t hand me that old line You really think that there’s some Disembodied, supernatural being at the helm? chorus: You’ve gotta be kidding me This is something I cannot believe This is the death of common sense You’ve gotta be kidding me This is something that could never be This whole thing reeks of arrogance You’ve gotta be kidding me He said it all could be explained In terms of time and random chance I said well yeah that’s just because Those are concepts we already understand We don’t do well with non-linear time Or multi-dimensional states of mind So it must be something else besides a Disembodied, supernatural being at the helm chorus Much was discussed, nothing was resolved Words tumbled like bricks after the wrecking ball On this one point we still get stuck Why would God let evil run amok? We’re right back to that same philosophical fork in the road A letter came the very next day, A picture of a cloud for a return address It read “I heard what you both said, Last night, and here is my redress: There is no day without the night The dark gives meaning to the light And then he signed it “love, Your Disembodied, Supernatural Being at the helm” You’ve gotta be kidding me I got a letter from a diety This goes beyond our common sense
