Original Hawaiian (ki hoalu) songs and arrangements from members of ...the online ohana (family) for anyone interested in learning to play this beautiful guitar style. (Slack key is traditional Hawaiian "back porch" music and has recently received more widespread exposure through George Winston's label.) The songs posted here are neither polished nor intended for commercial release; they are simply examples of slack key guitar played by regular people (both Hawaiian and haole) who love the style and want to share their learning experience with others. Story behind the song
I first started to try to play guitar in my 20s, and stopped playing until recently. I started getting interested in slack key about five years ago, but have only been working seriously for about two years (thanks to George Kahumoku's last two workshops). This song is a mixture of things in Drop C tuning. It starts with a version of Exercise 9 (Namaka's Mele) in Ozzie Kotani's book. Then there is a bridge of mine using a D chord (use your thumb to get the low D on the second fret). It then moves on to something of mine inspired by Leonard Kwan's Medley of Pretty Kehulani and Ipo Hula on track #2 of his Keala's Mele. I chose it for the CD because I love the rumbly sound you can get when you land on the lowest strings in drop C tuning, and the way the vamps just lie under your fingers. Tuning: Drop C (CGDGBD)
