Story behind the song
I was looking on a map of Northern California for a town called 'Happy Camp' where a friend was living and I ran across a stretch of hills in the Trinity Mountains called 'Whiskey Town'. I wrote the song over the next two days and it has since been a favorite for many of my fans.
Lyrics
You called me up at ten this mornin' to tell me you were gone. I spent the next three hours cryin' wonderin' what I had done. Maybe I ain't been everything in a man that you would have me to be But, baby I don't think you realize just how much you mean to me.... So I think I'll take a trip on up to Whiskey Town A ways up in the hills with noone else around Find a place where I can be alone and cry out loud until the pain is gone With a heart this heavy I know I can't stick around,... My friends will all know I've up and gone to Whiskey Town. 'Cause way up there in the Trinity hills There's a place where a man can forget his ills He can cry in shame where noone will know his name. And when I get up to Whiskey Town I'll sit and let my tears flow into the ground If you ever start to wonder why I'm not around A good friend could tell ya I've up and gone to Whiskey Town,... I know you've got your mind made up, This time yer gone for good Maybe I should try to change your mind, Baby I don't think I could There ain't no way a man should face his mate with a heart so full of grief So I'm goin' up to Whiskey Town to try and find some kind of relief,... 'Cause way up ther In the Trinity Hills there's a place where a man can forget his ills He can cry in vain where noone will know his pain And I'll stay up there in Whiskey Town 'Til I can swallow my pride and hold it down If you ever change your mind and start to wonder where I can be found I good friend could tell you I've up and gone to Whiskey Town,... Yes and you can find me all alone... In Whiskey Town
