Story behind the song

basically, dan wrote a couple of the parts on guitar, and then he and matt noticed that all the music parts they had been coming up with lately were really sad and depressing and minor, so the lyrics are more or less about that (they are supposed to sound overly dramatic to illustrate the point).  also, the title can either be taken to mean "a ballad that is in a minor key" or "a ballad in a minor".  aren't we clever?
