Story behind the song
It's a song about trying to put a good face on a frustratingly slow-moving romance. The structure of the song, in which the last verse is really the first verse repeated, was inspired by Green Day, and how Billy Joe Armstrong writes. The line "We're stuck together but we're torn apart" is from the Family Guy episode titled "Stuck Together, Torn Apart".
Lyrics
She's making me take my time
She's making me do it right
She's making me take it slow
Til she gives me the go
She's making me say I'm waiting
Wants me to show her patience
Wants me to keep things steady
Til she knows I'm ready
And I don't know just what you're after
And I don't know just what you're thinking
And when I say it, it sounds just like
Everyone else to me
But you'll see
I'll be there
We go out but we get nowhere
We stay in but we feel trapped
We get closer, we grow farther
We're stuck together but we're torn apart
And I don't know just what you're after
And I don't know just what you're thinking
And when I say it, it sounds just like
Everyone else to me
But you'll see
I'll be there
She's making me take my time
She's making me do it right
She's making me take it slow
Til she gives me the go
She's making me say I'm waiting
Wants me to show her patience
Wants me to keep things steady
Til she knows I'm ready
And I don't know just what you're after
And I don't know just what you're thinking
And when I say it, it sounds just like
Everyone else to me
But you'll see
I'll be there
