Story behind the song
This song was composed on 7/21/2025. It was inspired by the Bible Class at my church where we watched the Drive-through History of The Church - Acts to Revelation. The topic was the letters to the seven churches of Asia. The message to the church of Sardis was mostly negative. For the most part it was a dying church and God is warning it. I identify with this church in my struggle with sin. Jesus is the head of His church. Only He can rescue it, and only He can rescue me from sin.
Lyrics
I am a resident of Sardis. The good that seems to be in me is nothing but dead works. You may not realize how hard it is to follow if I'm only in it for the perks. You are the God who holds the pastors in Your hand, with heavenly messages to me. I try in vain to truly follow Your commands, I need Your Spirit's light to set me free. Keep me alert. Remove the cancer of my sin. I am almost ready to die. The things I've heard from You must cleanse me within, so I can live with You on high. I am a resident of Sardis. I hear Your word to me to hold fast and repent. Those things in me that are amiss, I ask that You straighten everything that is bent Though I may not have defiled my garments, my inward man is not what it should be Help me resist those pesky varmints, that Satan sends to wrest my mind from Thee The ways of man seem right in his own eyes; but You, O Lord, test the heart And You, O Lord, can see through my disguise. Help me to choose the better part. I am a resident of Sardis. You know my works are not perfect before You. Were You to leave because You know this, I'd have no hope to live with You. There's nothing I can do. The hour of Your return will come like a thief. Help me to watch my ways and do what's right. Help me to overcome. Put teeth in my belief, that I may walk before you clothed in white. Your love, O Christ, is stronger than my sin. One day You'll claim the church as Your wife. And only You can make me pure within. You've washed me clean and give eternal life. By faith I'll be a resident of Heaven.
