Story behind the song
The song is named after a Pennsylvania backroad that I used to drive on quite often. The road was gravel and every time it rained the thing was a swamp and treacherous to drive on. This song is relating that road to an uncertain time in my life. I was also very experimental with my vocals this time around, going for a higher, I'm-losing-my-mind type sound to my voice.
Lyrics
i drove through sleet today
you'd think it was mid-january
as i plowed through the april frost
i took time to notice a lonely canary
in all the mist how could it go on like this?
the world upside-down
no place to go, no time to clown
simple creatures thrive
to spite winter, they stay alive
i want to know, i want to know
how can i peer through a window?
when i live in a trance, live in a trance
just waiting for the day i jump the fence
well i'm stuck in skunk hollow
i'm water clinging to a road
and one side is where i want to be
the other is my home
