christian classic hymns
I'm a Christian songwriter who loves many types of music, but none more than the ancient hymns.
There is neglected gold lying about in dusty hymnals. Due to an understandable desire to create songs that appeal to contemporary tastes, there has been a gradual turning away from some of the most profound expressions of Christian faith that can be found outside of the Bible itself. Writers like Charles Wesley, Isaac Watts, John Newton, and Fanny J. Crosby composed dozens, even hundreds, of powerful spiritual songs. To Anna Laetitia Waring, who created, 'My Heart is Resting,' I owe a huge debt. Her words gleam like sparkling gems. Learning them and singing them was like a spiritual transfusion, giving me hope and comfort in dark times. Martin Luther's 'A Mighty Fortress' was a song I used to sing defiantly while walking the halls of York University. Let the demons hear the truths of that mighty man of faith! I don't know how many of these hymns I will record, but I intend to work on them between original projects. My voice is no longer as strong as it once was, so my range doesn't make singing some of these easy, but the substance of these songs is worth preserving for any listener who would like to be blessed, refreshed, and enriched.

Story behind the song
This is one of the many beautiful evening hymns that are gathering dust. This is a rocked up version, but the tune is true to the original. A refrain has been added.
Lyrics
Swift to its close ebbs out life's little day; Earth's joys grow dim, its glories fade away; Change and decay in all around I see; O Thou who changest not, abide with me. Abide with me, fast falls the eventide, The darkness deepens, Lord, with me abide! I need Thy presence every passing hour; What but Thy grace can foil the tempter's power? Who like Thyself my guide and stay can be? Through cloud and sunshine, Lord, abide with me. Abide with me, fast falls the eventide, The darkness deepens, Lord, with me abide! I fear no foe with Thee at hand to bless; Ills have no weight, and tears no bitterness: Where is death's sting? where, grave, thy victory? I triumph still if Thou abides with me. Abide with me, fast falls the eventide, The darkness deepens, Lord, with me abide! Hold Thou Thy cross before my closing eyes, Shine through the gloom, and point me to the skies; Heaven's morning breaks, and earth's vain shadows flee: In life in death, Lord, abide with me. Abide with me, fast falls the eventide, The darkness deepens, Lord, with me abide: When other helpers fail and comforts flee, Help of the helpless, Lord, abide with me; Abide with me; Abide with me.
