Story behind the song
The day that we went into the studio to record this song, we all sort of half-admitted to each other that we had never really liked the original lyrics to it all that much. I even admitted to the guys that I was never sure what the song was really about, or what it was actually trying to say. Good thing I wasn't singing the lead, I thought. ;) So with everyone's blessing, I offered to take a stab at re-writing the piece from the ground up.
Sometimes when I am writing, where I want a song to go and what I am trying to express just makes perfect sense to me, right from the beginning, and the way is clear. I felt that way about this song. On the most basic and literal level, I felt like Wreckage should be a song about the quest for redemption. Because of my personal faith, I know all too well what it feels like to have failed someone I love and to have regrets for things done in the past. If one is blessed enough to get to a point where one can begin to see the mistakes he or she has made in life, that enlightenment is only part of a more complete process-a plateau reached on the pathway to a higher destination: ascension and redemption.
I kept thinking about that juncture as I was writing and what started to take shape was basically one side of a conversation about getting to that very place-I see the mistakes and painful places where I have come from, I want to transcend them and amend for them, but I feel helpless to do so. If we reach that point, where we want to continue our climb but don't know how, I think we ask cry out. We all turn to someone and say, "Can you help me?" Isn't that right? Don't we ask that of a friend? Of a parent? Of God? I know I do. So Wreckage became my half of that exchange, and I pray we all find our own answers to it. God Bless.

Lyrics
I'm looking back on
All the places that I went wrong
I tried to go back
But It's been to long
So I find myself
Wondering like someone time forgot
I can't help thinking 'bout
All the things I know I'm not
Chorus:
I feel like running from the man I've been
After causing so much pain
I feel like hiding from the things I've done
And the wreckage that remains
Even if I go back to that other place
Where things were like before
I'd still be the same ole man that ran away
I don't wanna run anymore
I feel so cut off
From anything in me I've ever loved
I tried to reinvent myself
But I got nothing to build on
I've broken down everything
That was ever there to break
Starting over now all by myself
Is more than I can take
Chorus:
I feel like running from the man I've been
After causing so much pain
I feel like hiding from the things I've done
And the wreckage that remains
Even if I go back to that other place
Where things were like before
I'd be the same ole man that ran away
Bridge:
I don't wanna be the man I've been
I just don't know how I should begin
Sometimes I feel like running, running
Sometimes I feel like running, running
Chorus:
I feel like running from the man I've been
After causing so much pain
I feel like hiding from the things I've done
And the wreckage that remains
Even if I go back to that other place
Where things were like before
I'd still be the same ole man that ran away
I don't wanna run anymore
