I wrote the song in 1990 when I had moved to NYC and was roughing it on my own..I had chosen New York over Berlin..I suppose in some way I may have been thinking of the fall of the Berling Wall the previous year..I felt like a stranger in a strange land..
Lyrics
Listening to the Wall of Silence
It never answers me
Looking at the Wall
A mirror of parody
On every side the Wall surrounds
And never makes a sound
Reaching to the sky all day and night
And bedded in the ground
chorus:
The Wall of Silence
Like wailing sirens
The bricks that no-one can see
The Wall of Silence....
There's a ricochet reverberates
but you don't know from where
It's trapped like doubts inside your head
Still running scared somewhere
Bouncing off the wall and back
Till it melts and disappears
In a million ions laughing for no-one
Cos this wall has no ears
chorus:
Beyond the Wall some eyes are closed
Tightly on the other side
Painting the pictures they need to see
Hanging in frames without identities
There's hatred and passion and love combined
In this slow suicide
The wall stands tall you feel small
There's no place you can hide
chorus:
and fade
