Story behind the song
Orpheus, the son of Apollo, played the lyre so beautifully that no one could resist the charms of his music. Shortly after his marriage to his much-beloved wife Euridyce, she was killed by a poisonous snake and sent to the underworld. Orpheus journeyed there to play his lyre for the deities, hoping to persuade them to let her return with him. He played so beautifully that they agreed, with one condition: that he did not look back at her as they journeyed to the upper air. Just as they were about to come into the world above, Orpheus looked back to see if she was still behind him; he reached for her, but she was instantly borne away. Orpheus sang to mourn his loss, until one day he too was killed by maidens whose advances he had shunned. He re-joined his wife and was able to look at her whenever he pleased, never again to be punished for an impatient glance.
Lyrics
The journey may be long, the journey may be dark The path beset with dangers all along the way But every step I take, and every bridge I cross Is one less step between us, one less lonely day And even though the hand of death Has stretched itself to steal away our love To steal our love Through the flood and through the tempest Through bitter cold and darkness I will come I will come I will sing my songs, and declare my love I will bring you back to the world above Euridyce So here beneath the earth, and veiled within the dark I stand before the ones who will decide our fate So here I’ll sing my songs, and here I’ll play the strings And songs of love will melt these walls of death and hate La la la la … I will sing my songs, and declare my love ‘Til you find release to the world above Euridyce I can’t believe my ears, I can’t believe my eyes But I’m on the journey back, and you are following behind And if I can but wait to look upon your face Then nothing more will come between us ‘til the end of days And if I hear your voice behind me As we make our journey to the light, to the light Hope of love in days to come Will speed us on our way towards the sky, to the sky I can’t hear your footsteps, or hear your song In my heart I fear that you are gone Euridyce I can’t help but look back, I can’t help but look back I can’t help but look back to see if you’re still following behind (2x) Euridyce The rest of my life, the rest of my life The rest of my life, I will love you (2x) Euridyce
