Story behind the song
Dad played guitar, harmonica, sang, when time permitted which early in my life was often. It was so exciting to me when he'd pull his guitar case out, pick up his guitar and played and sang for us. As time progressed with more responsibilities (kids), he played less & less concentrating on his work. at one time he worked 3 jobs. A few years ago he was interested in playing again, but he had injured a finger on his left hand and had trouble making the chords. He purchased a gizmo that attached to the neck of his guitar that pressing one button, it would form the chords for you. He got frustrated with it because it didn't work well. He tried everything he could but just couldn't do it. During that time my sweet wife and I visited Dad & Mom, he explained to me his delima and gave his guitar to me. When we got home, I was heartbroken, and tears flowed, opening the guitar case. I found he had strung up a few nylon strings apparently in an effort to ease the pain of pressing the strings down. This song came to me within a day's time. As of posting of this song, Dad's will turn 95 in a few days. Having a stroke about a year ago which took away much of his short-term memory, but he has times of good clarity. We have to have round the clock care for him now and it is heartbreaking to see that he is not the same strong man he used to be.
Lyrics
This is the guitar Dad gave to me, I hope I can make it my own When I recall his sweet chords a ringing, it brings me back home, sweet home. Now Dad's hands can't make the chords anymore, although his hand were always so strong. He gave me all his love when things would go all wrong, and in my heart, his love he'd gladly pour. In my youth I could not comprehend how to handle this cruel world within. But he turned it into a lesson for this hard head of mine, so down the road I would be just fine. Well, it took many years for me to understand, your gift of love that turned a child to a man. Dad, you've always had a balance of strength and tenderness, and because of you my life is truly blessed. Well, your guitar is what you hear in this song, and I hope that it conveys my heart to you. You've given me a gift I never can repay, but with this song I'll try to find a way. Now I don't know if you understand, my thankfulness for your gentle hand. And in these words I hope its clear as a pretty sky of blue, Dad you know that I love you. Oh Dad, I love you
