I rewrote the opening number of my beach musical CATCH A WAVE to have a more universal feel. My unworthy tribute to Brian Wilson.

Sold a song to Disney at 12, masterminded a family band in my teens, wrote theater/cabaret in NYC in my youth, quit songwriting for a spell, now I’m back!
I love writing songs that capture strong feelings I’ve had about a time, person or place, and that wrap you in those feelings with a sumptuous arrangement and much to surprise the ear. I’m drawn to seductive rhythms and sophisticated chords, and themes of longing, carnality and joy. I want my listeners to be astonished!

Story behind the song
I needed a song for my heroine to be driving up the Pacific Coast Highway on her way to her cousins house in Malibu. The original lyric was very book-driven and segued to a counterpoint duet with the surfer boys.
Lyrics
I cant do summer In a cage of steel and stone Gotta find the sunshine And I gotta find it on my own Cause I cant run with the rules Of some corporate castle Goodbye to the fools Farewell to the hassle cause Im leaving behind All of the people and places that bore me Striking a path before me Doing it my way My way! Im taking my time Letting the sun and the ocean restore me Striking a path before me Doing it my way OUT ON THE HIGHWAY Somewhere, I will be there OUT ON THE HIGHWAY Cant see the whiteboard When my Wayfarers block the glare Cant hear the intercom With the wind whipping through my hair And Im not clicking the mouse And scanning the dropdown Im popping the clutch And dropping the top downcause Im leaving behind All of the people and places that bore me Striking a path before me Doing it my way My way! Im taking my time Letting the sun and the ocean restore me Striking a path before me Doing it my way OUT ON THE HIGHWAY Somewhere, I will be there OUT ON THE HIGHWAY
