Story behind the song
This is the result of a song started way back in 1981, with just a verse and chorus. I've tried to write the rest all this time with no luck. Somehow while playing what I had on piano a second melody and mood snuck in and the words over time seemed to have been fed to me without even knowing what they meant and then, along the way, it all made sense together, So now we have a medley of two songs...Probably everyone whose attended public or private school from primary grades thru high school has known that kid everyone made fun of due to any number of characteristics beyond their control which made them different, usually on the outside and which the other kids publicly humiliated them with jokes about them or even physical attacks. At my school it was Sherry Stone. So this is a two part story. First is what went on at school and the second is my imagined view into what Sherry Stone's world might have been like as a more mature woman, with the ending...well...stay for the ending and you'll find out.
Lyrics
SHERRY STONE:
Sherry Stone walked alone through the hallways in the seventh grade
at John C. Power Middle School
Wrinkled dress, same old one that smelled of yesterday
and all the other kids would look her way, point and laugh behind her back
and play a game that's played
On every school yard everyday
Stone's germs no take backs
And then they'd run away
As Sherry walked the halls alone
Have you ever had or known
Your very own personal Sherry Stone
Life moves on, Sherry's gone, Family moved away
Someone said they saw her in a nearby town
With a band of creeps, on the street, He said it just that way
Looked like a baby maybe on the way
And I was filled with shame
To think that I'd take part and play
Such a cruel and vicious game
Stone's germs no take backs
Then we would run away
And there's no more cruel isolation I suppose
Quite like being someone else's very own personal Sherry Stone
Bridge:
Well you know sometimes we may find
Amidst the noise and the commotion
What we thought was funny isn't
And it don't take Sherlock Holmes
To know and feel when evil's real
To know moral corrosion
That the clown whom you put down is you alone
Stone's germs, no takebacks, Then we would run away
And I wonder if now as adults one tear has flowed
All the world's a stage and boy we put on a show
While all along the devil'd been playing us for his very own personal Sherry Stones.........
NOBODY'S HOME:
I feel it comin on, another panic attack
You got another cigarette in your pack there Jack?
Whadaya mean you can't do nothing about that
A poor girl needs a friend and nobody's home
Bottom's falling out, Me thinks me smells a rat
my shrink, he says hope? Take these pills to relax
When a girl needs hope you know she needs it fast
This poor gitl needs some hope but nobody's home
Froggy went a courtin' and he did ride
With Miss Mousie, they were on cloud nine
A cat swallowed them whole as their wedding guests dined
Uncle Rat fell as well, now there's nobody home
I'm so lonely it's not just friends that I lack
Like Job's in The Bible, They'd condemn and attack
So I plead with God and he don't answer me back
This old gal wonders if there's nobody
Wasn't on purpose, But to my shame
Went kind of spastic, misused the Lord's holy name
How come I have so much skin in this game
If there ain't nobody home
In reflection there's really nothing I lack
Life hit hard but I never hit back
In case of fire, break this pane of glass
Just In case somebody comes home
Well you know sometime we may find amidst the noise and the commotion
A chance to share God's love to one who walks this world alone
But could you and I forgive those who would toy with our emotions
Well suppose we'd ever been someone else's
If long ago we'd been someone else's
Once upon a time we were someone else's
Very own personal Sherry...Stone
