Story behind the song
I love the dissonance in these chords, especially on the words 'this time'. It tugs me at my heartstrings every time I hear it. The refrain "won't be okay till you..." existed first, pretty much as its own entity, until I overheard a friend describe finding closure in an old relationship. We always wish for that last chance to say all the things we were too afraid to say, or didn't feel we impressed strongly enough. Often we never get the chance, but, strangely, when we do, it occurs to us that the limitations we set (if only i could say i love him or hear he loves me one last time) really never fixes anything. In fact, it makes you more acutely aware of how distant you and your partner were, and why the seperation occurred in the first place. Acknowledging this, you can finally move on to closure. This isn't a broken heart song. It's all about realizing closure.
Lyrics
Here in airports and parking lots I find I have thoughts about you Careless how you left me that night I thought I would die without you And you left me bleeding My heart's still breaking In jagged lines REFRAIN: It won't be okay till you say you love me It won't be okay till you say you love me One last time I know I should be mad at you And i have a good excuse First you love, then you leave me blind And you play tag with your youth If you're such a good boy And i a good girl I can't figure why REFRAIN: It won't be okay till you say you love me It won't be okay till you say you love me One last time Now i hear those words leave your lips Is it all I hoped to achieve Strange, now that you want me as I wanted you I still feel empty Even the best words will leave you hollow I've no tears left to cry REFRAIN: When you finally said that you love me Finally said that you love me One last time. Left me bleeding My heart's now mending In jagged lines When I finally said if you love me Finally said if you love me You'll yield, this time.
