Story behind the song
Donna sez: Cockatoos are parrot descendants of the theropod group of dinosaurs. When tame, they often bond most closely with just one member of their human flock’. I recently saw a video of a sulphur-crested cockatoo that appears to grieve when its human leaves the house. It paces the floor, makes eerily realistic sounds of a baby crying, and scurries from room to room, looking in the places its human might normally be. It’s both hilarious and heartbreaking to watch.
This is our humble tribute to these beautiful, intelligent creatures.
Lyrics
Intro
Mournful little theropod
You won't play or eat
You just pace the room in misery
On your zygodactyl feet
V1
Walking in circles
You squawk and you moan
Then pushing your beak
Against the floor
Try to peer under
The bedroom door
V2
Perched at the window
You’re waiting to see
Her wave from the car
The moment she'd
Pull into the yard
Chorus
Avian grief
What can I do
About avian grief?
I miss her too
Avian grief
Where do we find relief
I miss her too
V3
Sobbing and shaking
You’re breaking my heart
I’m also in shreds
You don’t know why
Leaving was sudden
Without goodbye
Chorus
Avian grief
What can I do
About avian grief?
I miss her too
Avian grief
How do we find relief...
Bridge
Bereft and untethered
We’re in this together
Two birds of a feather now
I with my heartache
You with your wail
Angel wings drooping
Dragging your tail
Chorus
Avian grief
What can I do
About avian grief?
I miss her too
Avian grief
How do we find relief
I miss her too
I miss her too
