Story behind the song
A lot of people have either really selfish or fairy-tale ideas of what constitutes "real" love. It was time to say something about that. The song was husband and wife team Tim & Diana's first complete musical collaboration and was recorded the day before their 22nd anniversary.
Lyrics
You can hear ‘em squawkin’ most every day on the radio and the TV— Tellin’ ya’ how to live your life, all the things you need to do just to be on top now. Each voice another instrument in this symphony of noise, the cacophony plays on. Words, only words; broken promises that crush the seeds of truth. What is real, how it feels, what it means to hold onto the easy thing you’ve got. Careless lies and misplaced sighs mock the meaning of the word. ‘Cause Love is an action. Love is an action. Love is an action. So move your feet. It ain’t all about getting’ what you think you need from the one you give your worst. And how you feel don’t even figure in this equation, baby, ‘cause you’re the lowest number in the stack. Don’t hurt the one you heart; it’s about letting go and wanting what is best for someone else. It ain’t no punishment, but it’s discipline you need to help you see With eyes that are clear and a heart that is true, a will to sacrifice for another. Yeah, the purest act we’ve been shown is to lay down our lives for each other. ‘Cause Love is an action. Love is an action. Love is an action. So move your feet. So you think you’re sitting pretty over there in the shadows—what you hidin’ from? It’s time you learned that love’s a verb—whatever made you think it’s just a noun? Can you find it in your heart to love that man over there? I ain’t askin’ you to like all the things he say and do. Anyone can make love, baby, but tell me—are you man enough to do the love that’s required of you? And he may try to push you away any way he can, with all the tricks at his command. And you can stick it to him real good—but show me the stronger of the two. That Love is an action. Love is an action. Love is an action. So move your feet.
