Story behind the song
"Maggie Mae" is a traditional 19th century Liverpool folk song about a local prostitute who robbed "homeward bounders" which is scouse for sailors coming home from a round trip. Friggin' was a sailors/ slave punishment. It was a shaved ginger root up the anus to inflict a constant burning sensation.
Lyrics
Now gather round me sailor boys, and listen to me plea And when you hear my tale you'll pity me As I was a friggin' fool in the port of Liverpool The first time I came home from the sea I was paid off at the home, from the voyage to Sierra Leone Two pounds ten and sixpence was me pay With a pocket full o' tin I was very soon taken in By a girl with the name of Maggie Mae Oh, Maggie Mae, they've taken her away And she'll never walk down Lime Street any more She robbed so many sailors and captains of the whalers That dirty, no-good, robbin' Maggie Mae 'Ow well did I remember when I first saw Maggie Mae She was cruisin' up and down old Canning Place She hid a figure so divine, like a frigate of the line And me being a sailor, I gave chase The morning I awoke and I was flat and stoney broke No jacket, trousers, waistcoat could I find When I asked her where they were, she said, "Oh my dear sir, They're down at Kelly's locker, number nine" Old, Maggie Mae, Old. Maggie Mae, they've taken her away And she'll never walk down Lime Street any more She robbed so many sailors and captains of the whalers That dirty, no-good, robbin' Maggie Mae
