This song was written by Margaret Cobb and Bruce Channel and released in 1961. It made the top 100 and stayed on the charts for some weeks.
These are songs to which I have a sentimental attachment for one reason and another.
Anyone who loves music had songs or instrumentals which influenced him or her, that began the love affair with music. The songs on this page are all songs that have been important to me at different times in my life. How many songs the page contains will depend largely on time. I'm always writing new tracks, so these will occur when they become insistent, or when I'm lacking new song inspiration.
Story behind the song
John Lennon had a number of 45 rpm records and this was one of them. However, I was enchanted by a 1969 version featuring Crowbar, a Toronto band. I heard the recording exactly once. It always remained with me and a sort of mythology built up in my mind concerning the track. Not many years ago now, my daughter found the recording for me. It was not at all as I remembered it! Consequently, I decided to make my own recording. It's close to how the song felt for me. I didn't look up the chords, so they are probably not exactly right, but I was trying to re-create a memory and thought that listening to any version would colour that. The lyrics are not the same as any existing version, I think.
Lyrics
Hey, hey, baby!
I want you,
To be my girl!
When I see you walking down the street,
My head spins round and round.
You look so pretty and you look so sweet,
I wanna make you mine all mine!
Hey, hey baby!
I want you,
To be my girl.
Hey, hey, baby!
I want you,
To be my girl!
When you turn and walk away,
I wanna yell out, 'Hey, hey, hey!
Come on baby, give me a whirl,
I wanna know if you'll be my girl.
Hey, hey, baby!
I want you,
To be my girl!
