Story behind the song
Roger fell asleep on his very short train journey to work. He awoke to see a man sat opposite him who looked familiar, they greeted each other saying "Hello". Another man joins the pair, he too looked familiar & also said "Hello". The men nodded and smiled at him. The trains rocking motion sent Roger back to sleep. He was jolted awake to find the train had stopped at a station past the one he should have got off at. Roger spoke to the ticket inspector who told him that it would be ok to stay on the train as it's going back in the direction it came from, so Roger retook his seat. As soon as the train began to move he fell asleep again. Roger was woken by the feeling that someone had sat down next to him. When he opened his eyes the man looked very familiar & he said "Hello". Roger closed his eyes, but within seconds he opened them to see 2 more men, both looking very familiar, had sat opposite him. They smiled & nodded, Roger nodded back frowning as he was sure he knew the 3 men sat with him, but couldn't remember who they were. In seconds he had fallen back to sleep when suddenly he felt someone shaking him gently by the shoulder. He opened his eyes to see the ticket inspector who said, "Sir you must have fallen asleep the train has ended it's journey now, you need to get off". At that Roger looked to his right and ahead, but the other 3 men were nowhere to be seen. "Oh dear", he said, "It looks like I've missed my station again". The ticket inspector looked at Roger quizzically. "There's only this station between where you got on and the end of the line Sir", he said. Roger looked through the train windows and saw a sign which read TERMINUS. "Terminus" Roger enquired of the inspector, "Where are we please", he asked. "Why Roger Browne, don't you know where you are, this is your final stop, your resting place, you have just arrived at your eternal destination". Roger began to stand up from his seat, but as he did so the train and everything in it turned to mist evaporating into thin air. He grabbed at the inspector, who had now become one of the men who had sat with him earlier. He looked into his eyes and Roger recognised the man as his own Father. 2 more men appeared at his side from thin air & when Roger looked at them he recognised them as his brothers. All 3 men had died in a train crash some 10 years earlier on that very same day. Roger stood staring at them with his mouth wide open unable to speak. Very abruptly he was shaken from behind & when he turned his head he realised it was the ticket inspector. Everything about the train suddenly returned into focus. "I think this is your stop Sir", the inspector said. Rogers eyes searched the carriage, but no one else was there. "Where are we", he asked. "This is Middle Wallop Sir, your stop I do believe". Roger dazed & looking pale was helped from the train by the ticket inspector. "That's what happens when you fall asleep on trains Sir, you wake up feeling that you've been on a much longer journey than you actually have", the inspector said as he closed the carriage door. Roger watched as the train pulled slowly away then he walked off towards the town centre. When he arrived at the TV station where he worked he saw everyone crowded round various television screens looking horrified. "What's going on" Roger asked his secretary. "Oh, Mr Browne you've been very lucky, very lucky indeed", she said as she hugged him tightly. Roger at first seemed very confused by what was happening, until he saw & heard what had happened. The 8:10 train that left Middle Wallop station 2 minutes after he had got off had crashed into an oncoming freight train. It was a devastating scene of wreckage and carnage with no survivors. Roger fainted. When he came round he tried to tell everyone what had happened earlier, but they dismissed it as shock & suggested he go home. Roger believed his father & brothers had warned him & saved his life that day, but he never caught a train ever again.
