Story behind the song
This one of three songs composed by Doug Schroeder before dawn on 9/18/21. I have been working on putting all the psalms to music. One hundred and three of them are completed. Now there are just a few short ones left to compose and record. Psalm 119 (being 176 verses) is one that would probably take more than a complete album to complete. So, I decided to record each of the Hebrew alphabetical sections separately. I completed the music for Aleph and Beth (the first two letters of the Hebrew alphabet) this morning. There is a bit of a caveat to this recording. The music for verses 9 and 10 are not original. But, I have tried everything I know of to try to find out who the original artist is to no avail. I first learned the song almost 50 years ago from a Navy companion named Bob Sheldon. The music is too good to supplant with any music I could come up with for those verses. So, I kept it the same. I also used the same melody for verse 11. Verses 12-15 are original. This song is the first one that I recorded in collaboration with my grandson, Moses. Hence, the new band name (Schroeder Family Band). That way any of the musicians in my family can be included in the recordings of our family's music. Yesterday morning Moses and I were scheduled to practice violin and guitar for our churchs worship service today. But the rest of the family was participating in a 5k walk/run for a local crisis pregnancy center. So, I picked up Moses from the Catholic high school where it was being hosted. We had a half-hour before we needed to leave for practice, so we practiced and recorded this music before going to church for practice.
Lyrics
9 Wherewithal shall the young man cleanse his way?
(Wherewithal shall the young man cleanse his way?)
By giving heed unto Thy word.
(By giving heed unto Thy word.)
10 With my whole heart have I sought Thee:
(With my whole heart have I sought Thee:)
Let me not wander from Thy commandments.
(Let me not wander from Thy commandments.)
11 Thy word I have hidden in my heart,
(Thy word I have hidden in my heart,)
That I might not sin against Thee.
(That I might not sin against Thee.)
12 Blessed art Thou, O LORD: teach me Thy statutes.
13 With my lips I have declared all the judgments of Thy mouth.
14 I have rejoiced in the way of Thy testimonies, as much as in all riches.
15 I will meditate in Thy precepts, and have respect unto Thy ways.
16 I will delight myself in Thy statutes: I will not forget Thy word.
