Story behind the song
A young girls dream of being a ballerina turns into a nightmare. Bella was given a small ornately carved wooden music box for her 13th birthday on the 31st October. After she carefully unwrapped her present she opened the lid and the music box began playing a delightful little tune. Inside was a miniature ballerina doll wearing a pretty white tutu and white satin ballet shoes. It stood up on one leg and began to twirl around to the music. Bellas friends at the birthday party thought the music box and it's ballerina was very beautiful. When Bella closed the lid the music stopped, but she thought she could still hear it very quietly playing, but none of her party guests could hear it. Bella put her right ear close to the music box and after politely asking her friends for silence she listened intently for a few seconds. As she was about to lift the ornately carved wooden lid she thought that the music stopped playing. Bella shrugged and without lifting the lid gave the music box to her mother asking her to take it to her bedroom so that it wouldn't get damaged as her guests kept asking to play with it. Later that night, after she went to bed exhausted from her lively birthday party, Bella eventually drifted off to sleep & began to dream about being a beautiful ballerina like the one in her music box. She woke up in the middle of the night feeling thirsty. She took a few sips of water from the glass her mother had brought her after tucking her into bed. Bella noticed that the music box lid was open and the little ballerina was dancing & twirling around to the music. She got out of bed & tip-toed over to her dresser and watched mesmerized. Gently with one finger Bella touched the ballerina doll on it's head as it turned and for a split second Bella thought she saw the miniature doll smile. The birthday girl whispered, "If I make a wish tonight I might wake up tomorrow just like you, and dance to music whenever I wanted to". She closed the lid and got back into bed. As she closed her eyes the clock in the hall downstairs began to chime it's bells to announce midnight and the end of All Hallows Eve. Bella pulled the bed sheets close to her chin, screwed up her closed eyes, crossed her fingers and whispered softly 3 times, "Please, please, please can I wake up tomorrow and be just like my beautiful music box ballerina". When morning came Bella's Mother went to wake her daughter, but she wasn't in bed. The music box was open, music was playing and the ballerina in her pretty pink tutu was twirling & dancing around. Looking around her daughters bedroom her Mother saw that the young girls slippers & dressing gown were still on the chair where she had placed them as her daughter climbed into bed. Her daughters clothes were on the opposite chair ready for the new day, but the little girl was nowhere to be found. Bella's Mother put out her hand to close the lid of the music box when she suddenly noticed that the dancing ballerina looked remarkably like her daughter. Smiling she slowly closed the lid and the music stopped. Suddenly she thought she heard a tiny squeaky voice coming from inside the music box. When she opened the lid she stared in absolute horror as the tiny dancing figure opened it's eyes & raising her arms towards her Mother the ballerina said, "Look Mummy, I'm a ballerina, watch me dance". Her Mother clasped her hands to her mouth stifling a scream and fell to the floor in a feint. Bella got her wish & wearing her pretty white tutu & white satin ballet shoes carried on dancing & twirling to the music as the music box lid slowly closed shut. The small wooden music box lid became sealed tightly shut and was not opened by Bella's Mother ever again.
