A performance by Sean McGaughey is hard to define
Over the past year, Sean has been focusing on his songwriting. The results were recorded live in concert in December 2003. They are here for you to enjoy.
Story behind the song
I saw Luther Wright and the Wrongs in Concert at the Hamilton Festival of Friends in 2003.
Luther remarked from the stage that we should all email Muchmusic and CMT to request their new single but they likely wouldn't play it because it was Too Country.
Too Country struck me as a great idea for a song.
Lyrics
2- For the Sake of the Song
lyrics and music ©S. McGaughey August 2003
You can see him everywhere
in the coffee shops, the county fairs,
and smoky bars trying to keep the tune alive
His dreams of fame and fortune
are long since gone,
but he gets up every night for the sake of the song.
Too country, for the radio
Too old, to make a video
Too good, to be playing here
Too crazy to ever quit
Too lonesome, for pop music
Too damn long, to be doing it
Too late, to ever turn back now
Just do it for the sake of the song.
For the sake of the song, maybe just one person will listen close tonight
For the sake of the song, the one that makes everybody feel alright
For the sake of the song, for that shining moment when they all sing along.
It's the reason that the band keeps playing on.
Well it's a life, if not a living
Though the road's so unforgiving.
Never have a lot, but it's enough for getting by
On the stage he belongs
He just keeps on, keepin' on
And he does it, for the sake of the song.
For the sake of the song...
Too Country...
