A 'Tone Poem'... in 1967 my English teacher, Mr Dobbs, introduced us to the wonderful world of the Japanese Haiku. We attempted to write our own. The idea has stayed with me all these years. I have 'recited' my very favourite one here.

Major Snagg is the invented name of the 'band' that perform all my own musical creations. (songs and instrumentals). I play guitars, bass, rudimentary keyboards, harmonica, and sing. Melody has always been important to me... lyrics and guitar solos have to say or communicate something. I create musical worlds that I hope that you dear listener, will also want to explore and live in for a few moments...or longer if you feel that way inclined.

Story behind the song
Recently I was reading about The Beatles...there's a surprise ! .... about backwards vocals in their songs. The backwards vocals at the end of The Beatles song, Rain are merely the actual John Lennon vocals reversed...but some folks will always believe that they say something else... so much so, that on the rear cover of a Beatles album released in Japan, all the lyrics to the songs were printed...along with what they thought that the words were on the 'outro' of the song, Rain. They believed that the words that John Lennon sang there were, " Stare it down, and nourish what comes near you" It's wrong of course, but those 'misheard lyrics' are in themselves very haiku like ...so very Japanese. I almost wish that John was singing that. So, I have taken those 'misheard lyrics', and used them in this piece of music. They are too precious to be lost. The 'vocals' on this piece of music are my own slight variation of the very well known haiku by Matsuo Basho (1680)
Lyrics
Stare It Down (David A Briggs) 2021 with a little help from someone from Japan many years ago. Stare it down, and nourish what comes near you... Stare it down, and nourish what comes near you... On a withered bough (5) A crow alone is perching (7) Autumn evenings now. (5) Stare it down, and nourish what comes near you... Stare it down, and nourish what comes near you... the Basho original is slightly different... On a withered branch A crow is perched An autumn evening

I really like this - great vibe and slightly left field. It has a fantastic psychedelic feel to it. Top notch production and performance. Intriguing track!

Absolutely fascinating!!! the concept is so mystical and 1960's. it brings back all the magic of the early days when Rock left the cradle to shake the world! Brilliant track David!
